Marian Cult in Spain

Cantigas de Santa Maria, Las Huelgas, Llibre Vermell

4 singers and instrumentalists

The program illustrates the Marian devotion developed in the Iberian peninsula from the time of King Alfonso X of Castile, through three music collections of extraordinary historical importance: the cycle of the Cantigas de Santa Maria, collected for Alfonso X "el Sabio" at the end of the thirteenth century; the Codex Las Huelgas, compiled among the walls of the Cistercian convent of Santa María la Real de Las Huelgas in Burgos in the first half of 1300; the Llibre Vermell containing songs and dances of the pilgrims who went to the monastery of Monserrat, to venerate the image of the black Madonna, object of cult since 880.
